VTRAM – Video Traffic Monitoring System

Client: Nottingham Traffic Control (NTC)

Problem: Closed-circuit television images provide an invaluable aid to traffic management operations. However, if the number of cameras is large it becomes difficult to analyse the image content on a continuous basis.

Solution: The VTRAM system analyses the real-time video images and assists traffic operators by raising attention to anomalous situations on the road, which require adjustments of the settings of the SCOOT system. The system also helps to implement the requirements of the Data Protection Act by removing identifiable features of individual road users if the traffic images are provided to third parties for R&D purposes.

Result: The system was deployed at the Nottingham Traffic Control Centre to assist operators and to provide real-time video feed to a research lab at Konan University in Japan.
